Meet the Zozobra: The World’s Largest Puppet!

There are world records of all kinds, like the longest model train, largest cardboard box, and even the most books typed backwards. But have you seen the world’s largest puppet?

Since 1712, in Santa Fe, New Mexico, the Fiestas de Santa Fe is held. One of the primary elements of this celebration is the burning of the Zozobra, or “Old Man Gloom.” While the burning has occurred since 1912, the 2007 edition was classified as a Guinness World Record at 49 feet, 11 inches tall.

Please view the of the “hideous but harmless” marionette and this unique festival at Will Shuster’s Zozobra website. Shuster created the first Zozobra and subsequent giant marionettes all the way until 1965, and since then, the Kiwanis Club of Santa Fe continues the tradition.

And now, a video of the record-holding Burning of Zozobra 2007!
