Bean Bags and Tic-Tac-Toe – Take Me Back Tuesday remembers the Toss Across

As a toddler, there was nothing I loved more than playing Tic-Tac-Toe on my refrigerator with those boring yellow magnetic X’s and O’s; after all, when you play by yourself, you’re always the winner. In spite of my one-sided victories, my interest in Tic-Tac-Toe became an obsession (especially when I was victorious against other people) so my mom bought me “the greatest game in the history of great games” – Toss Across (that’s the nonsense I said when I was little)!

So, where did this pleasantly plastic marvel come from? Here’s some history on the Toss Across from Wikipedia:

The result of true collaboration, Toss Across was first introduced in 1969 by the Ideal Toy Company. While the game was designed by Marvin Glass and Associates, it was created by the team of Hank Kramer, Larry Reiner and Walter Moe, and then distributed by Mattel. Consequently, it’s safe to say that Toss Across was a team effort across the board.

A game of luck and skill, Toss Across entered the toy market as a competitive Tic-Tac-Toe game where the players threw light bean bags at the 9 targets in an attempt to change them to their desired letter. However, each block includes a blank side in addition to an X and an O so scoring a hit doesn’t mean you’ll get lucky and doesn’t prevent you from scoring for your opponent. Of course, the first player to get three of their letters in a row wins.

Though I haven’t played a rousing round of Toss Across in quite a few years, when I come across it in a store or on a website, I’m always surprised at the changes I see, as well as what remains the same. I mean, while the features of the game are crafted a little better with a lot more color, Toss Across is still the same great game that tided me over during my Tic-Tac-Toe obsession.

A game so deceptively simple, yet so much fun, Toss Across – the classic game- is here to stay.
